I was not a Harry Potter kid. Growing up, I had no interest in stories I couldn’t see happening in real life. Magic, dragons, wizards, none of it clicked for me. I wanted rom coms and reality TV and things that felt possible. Imaginative fiction just wasn’t my world.

That changed slowly, and honestly, Matt had everything to do with it. He grew up loving Harry Potter the way some people love a hometown sports team. It was personal for him. So somewhere around 2020 or 2021 I finally agreed to sit down and watch, mostly because he asked nicely and I had nowhere else to be.

We ripped through all eight movies in about a week. By the end of Sorcerer’s Stone I understood what all the fuss was about. By Deathly Hallows Part 2 I was sobbing. There is a scene where Harry talks about being afraid of death and I was not prepared for it. Not even a little.

Now it is a yearly tradition. Full marathon, themed food, the whole deal.

Our Hogwarts Houses Almost Caused a Diplomatic Incident

Before I tell you about the food I have to tell you about the houses.

We were standing in line at Six Flags one afternoon and I casually mentioned that I thought I was Slytherin. Matt looked at me the way only a husband who has known you for years can look at you and said, very calmly, that I was definitely Hufflepuff. I protested. He stood firm. We were in line for probably forty five minutes so we pulled up the full Pottermore test to settle it.

Hufflepuff. 98%.

He was Slytherin, which surprised exactly nobody.

I wear that Hufflepuff badge with pride now. We are the loyal ones. The hardworking ones. The ones who make the dinner while everyone else takes credit for it.

🍽️ Harry Potter Dinner Menu Ideas: Magical Dishes for Movie Night

A Harry Potter-themed dinner party should feel like an event. Think comfort food with a touch of enchantment, cozy, hearty, and totally magical.

Here’s what we served for our Harry Potter Dinner and a Movie Night:

✨ Golden Snitch Mac & Cheese Balls

These were Matt’s request and they were the most work on the whole table. Mac and cheese balls are his absolute favorite, so when I decided to go all out on this dinner I knew I had to make them golden snitch worthy. That meant gold wings, a little extra crunch, and about three failed attempts before I got the coating right.

Worth it. They were so good that Matt ate half of them before I finished plating everything else.

🍖 Hagrid’s Hearty Roast Beef

The scenes in the Great Hall have always been so dreamy to me. All that food just appearing out of nowhere, piled high, warm and abundant. I wanted the centerpiece of this dinner to feel like that. Big and comforting and a little bit show stopping.

A proper roast felt right. Seasoned well, cooked low, sliced thick. Hagrid would approve.

🥔 Hufflepuff Golden Smashers

I had to represent. Crispy smashed potatoes with herbs and a little gold for house pride. If you’re Gryffindor you can still eat them. We’re inclusive here.

🧁 The Great Hall Dessert Spread

This was my favorite part of the whole table to build. The candy scenes in Harry Potter, Honeydukes, the trolley on the Hogwarts Express, the feasts, I wanted all of it represented on one board. Pumpkin pasties, chocolate frogs, Howler hand pies, Happee Birthdae Harry cupcakes, edible wands, chocolate coins, candy in house colors.

It looked like pure chaos and it was perfect.

🍺 Butterbeer

I loved it. Matt thought it was too sweet, which tracks because Matt has the sweet drink tolerance of someone who thinks a single square of dark chocolate is indulgent. More for me. Frosty mug, whipped cream, caramel drizzle. If you have any Hufflepuff in you at all, you will love this drink.

🕯️ Setting the Scene: Bring Hogwarts to Your Home

You do not need floating candles to make this feel like Hogwarts, though I will not stop you if you want to try. Gold chargers and mismatched goblets go a long way. We added house color banners and a few candles and it felt immediately different from a regular Tuesday night dinner. The dessert board did most of the heavy lifting visually. It was the first thing Matt saw when he walked into the kitchen and he stopped in the doorway, which is the exact reaction every person who makes a themed board is hoping for.
