The Avengers Endgame Dinner and a Movie

The Avengers: Endgame Dinner & Movie Night That Made Me Cry Into My Short Ribs

I have made a lot of food in my life. A lot of themed dinners. A lot of elaborate movie nights where I convinced myself this one was going to be special, only to discover that the chicken was dry and the aesthetic was giving “I tried.” But this one was different. This one actually broke me open a little.

Avengers: Endgame is the movie that ends things. It wraps up eleven years of storytelling and does it in a way that somehow earns every single tear it asks for. And when I sat down to plan this chapter, I knew I couldn’t treat it like just another dinner. It needed to feel like a sendoff. A real one. The kind you remember.

So I built this menu around Tony Stark. Not just the action hero version. The one who figured out time travel in a garage because he couldn’t stop. The one who said “I love you 3000” to his daughter at bedtime. The one who looked at a gauntlet full of infinity stones and made a choice. I wanted every dish on this table to carry some of that weight.

It nearly broke me, for the record. But it was worth it.

Bro Thor’s Beer Flight

There’s a version of this chapter where I made some elaborate blue cocktail with dry ice and LED lights and a name like “The Quantum Realm Gimlet.” And that version would have been fun. But it would have been wrong.

Because the Endgame version of Thor is not glowing cocktail Thor. He’s sitting in New Asgard in unwashed sweatpants eating Pop-Tarts and watching TV, and honestly, I’ve never related to a superhero more in my life. So instead of a fancy drink, we did a beer flight. A proper one, served on a wooden flight board with chalkboard labels, under a New Asgard Brewing Co. sign that I am not ashamed to say delighted me.

The naming is where this got really fun. Every beer got an Avengers alias: The Captain for the lager, because he is crisp and dependable and would absolutely drink something that tastes like America. Bro Thor for the IPA, because bros drink IPAs, this is just a fact. The Scarlet Witch for the amber, because she’s complex and a little dangerous and she will wreck you before you realize what happened. And The Snap for the stout, because it’s dark, it’s heavy, and half of you disappears after you finish it.

If you don’t drink alcohol, the cookbook has the non-alcoholic substitution built right in. Ginger ale, spiced ginger beer, cream soda, root beer. You still get the flight experience, you still get to do the fun labels, you still win the evening.

Hulk’s Tiny Tacos

Here’s the thing about Smart Hulk in Endgame. He signs autographs. He takes selfies. He is gentle and accommodating and has fully made peace with himself in a way the rest of us are still working on in therapy. And he eats tiny tacos, which is one of the most delightful details in the entire film.

These tacos are made with citrus-braised shredded chicken that gets seared first, then simmered low and slow in lime juice, orange juice, and spices until it’s tender and impossible to stop eating. The shells are either street taco-sized or cut down from regular tortillas with a round cookie cutter, then fried until they’re crispy and golden and structurally capable of holding all the good things.

What I love most about these is the presentation. They go into taco holders, lined up in rows, and they look absurdly charming on the table. Small but mighty. Just like the man holding them.

“Proof Tony Stark Has a Heart” Funeral Potatoes

My grandmother made funeral potatoes. I grew up eating them at church potlucks and holiday gatherings and the kinds of occasions where a lot of people in one room needed to feel comforted by something warm and cheesy and carb-forward. They are not glamorous. They are not sophisticated. They are exactly right every single time.

Tony Stark’s funeral scene is the most expensive single shot ever filmed. All those A-listers, that lakeside setting, the arc reactor floating in the water surrounded by flowers. It’s the kind of cinematic moment that costs a hundred million dollars and earns every penny. And I thought, what do you serve at a funeral like that? Something that actually means something. Something from memory. Something that says: he had a heart, and we all knew it.

So I made funeral potatoes in heart-shaped ramekins. And I served them next to his braised short ribs. And I cried a little bit while assembling them, which I think is the appropriate response.

The recipe uses frozen cubed or shredded potatoes, sour cream, cream of chicken soup, sharp cheddar, and a gruyère upgrade that I highly recommend not skipping. The whole thing goes into the oven and comes out bubbling and golden, with a buttered cornflake crust on top that shatters when you break into it. The heart-shaped ramekin is optional but I’m telling you it lands every time.

Stark Industries Red Wine Braised Short Ribs

These came from my butcher shop, Troub’s Butcher Shop . The one I will not stop talking about in this blog, and I refuse to apologize for that. I asked them to cut the short ribs for me special that day, and when they handed them over, I understood immediately that I was working with something extraordinary. These were enormous. Serious. The kind of cut that asks something of you as a cook.

They got seared hard first, because you don’t skip that step. You build a fond in the bottom of the pan, and that fond is where the flavor lives. Then in goes the mirepoix, the tomato paste, the cabernet, the beef broth, the herbs. Everything gets nestled back in together, the lid goes on, and the whole thing goes into the oven for three and a half hours.

What comes out is not a pot roast. It doesn’t taste like your mom’s Sunday dinner, though your mom’s Sunday dinner is probably great. It tastes like something you paid for at a restaurant with white tablecloths. The meat pulls from the bone with zero resistance. The braising liquid reduces into a glossy, deeply savory sauce that coats everything it touches. I served it alongside the lemon garlic asparagus because the brightness cuts through the richness perfectly and because Tony Stark deserved a vegetable at his memorial dinner.

This is the dish I’m most proud of from this entire chapter. It set up everything that came after it.

“I Love You 3000” Chocolate Ganache Tarts

This one stopped me while I was making it.

I was pressing the Oreo crust into the mini tart pans and I thought about how that line came from Tony’s daughter Morgan. How she said it to him before bed. How he repeated it back to Pepper at the end because those were the last words that mattered. And I thought, if I’m going to honor this movie and this character, the dessert has to say that.

So it does. In piped chocolate, on a white platter, between two individual dark chocolate ganache tarts. Each one is topped with a halved strawberry, fresh blueberries, a sprig of rosemary, edible gold dust, and an Iron Man helmet chocolate that I made in a mold specifically for this dinner. The ganache is smooth and deeply chocolate and exactly rich enough that you don’t want more than one. Which is why there are exactly two. One for each of you.

The Iron Man chocolates are the detail I’m most proud of. They’re small. They sit on top of the ganache like little monuments. And when you look at the whole plate, the text between the tarts and the helmets on top, it reads like a scene.

I love you 3000 is a few words that managed to make an entire movie theater cry. I put them in chocolate on a platter for a Tuesday night at home, and I don’t think that’s too much at all.

The Full Spread

When everything came together on the table, I stood back and just looked at it for a minute. The tiered stand with Hulk’s Tiny Tacos on top. The “I Love You 3000” tarts on the second level. The short rib plates on either side. The beer flight to the right. The menu card holding it all together. Avengers: Endgame on the screen behind it.

It was the best spread I’ve ever set. And I say that having made a lot of spreads.
