The Goonies Dinner & Movie Night That’s a Love Letter to Your Childhood

I watched The Goonies for the first time at my mom’s friend’s house when I was very young, on a LaserDisc. If you don’t know what that is, congratulations on your youth. A LaserDisc was essentially a vinyl record the size of a pizza box that somehow played movies, and we thought it was the most incredible technology on earth. I am not exaggerating when I say I think about that night every time I hear the Cyndi Lauper soundtrack kick in. There are movies you watch and movies that live in you, and The Goonies is firmly in the second category for most of us who grew up in the 80s. It is a movie about kids who refuse to give up, who follow a treasure map into the unknown, who get chased by actual criminals and somehow come out the other side with the Inferno. It is also, famously, a movie with a lot of snacks in it. Building this chapter felt less like recipe development and more like paying a debt I owed to eight-year-old me.

Pepsi Pirate Elixir

If you have seen The Goonies recently, you know Pepsi is practically a cast member. It shows up, it matters, and Chunk definitely has feelings about it. So when I was building this menu, a Pepsi cocktail was not optional. The Pepsi Pirate Elixir is a dark, cold, deeply satisfying drink that leans into the pirate vibes of the whole evening. I garnished it with a lime pirate ship and a skull and crossbones flag pick, and I served it in a skull mason jar because I am who I am. When these were sitting on the table next to the treasure map dip, the whole scene clicked into place.

One Eyed Willy Treasure Dip and Chunk’s Chips

This is the dish that made me the happiest to look at when it was finished. The concept is a homemade French onion dip styled to look like a treasure map: a red candy X marks the spot, kalamata olives trace a dotted path, and fresh herb clusters fill in the landscape. It is creamy, herby, savory, and completely unhinged in the best way. One Eyed Willy would absolutely approve. I paired it with what I called Chunk’s Chips, a seasoned ruffled chip situation that is exactly what it sounds like and exactly what you want.

The detail work on this dip is the kind of thing that makes your movie night guests lose their minds a little. Worth every second.

Hey You Guys! Salad

Every great movie night spread needs something that makes you feel slightly less feral about the pizza you are about to eat. The Hey You Guys! Salad does exactly that. It is a gorgeous, colorful salad loaded with heirloom tomatoes, red onion, fresh mozzarella pearls, skull-shaped croutons, and a bright, simple dressing. The skull croutons are doing a lot of emotional work here and I refuse to apologize for that.

Goonies Never Say Die Pizza

You cannot do a Goonies movie night without pizza. It is basically a rule. In the movie, the Fratelli brothers are eating pizza when the Goonies first end up in the restaurant. Pizza is in the DNA of this film. For this chapter, you have options: make it from scratch, grab a Papa Murphy’s and bake it at home, or channel your inner Fratelli and call Domino’s. What I did was make a pepperoni pizza and put it in a custom box I designed that reads “Never Say Die Pizza, Famous New York Style Pizza, Since 1985.” The Astoria, OR address. The X marks the spot. That box single-handedly elevated a pepperoni pizza into a thematic centerpiece and I am very proud of it.

Sloth Love Chunk Sundae

Sloth loves Chunk. Chunk loves Baby Ruth. Therefore this dessert was never not going to happen. The Sloth Love Chunk Sundae is a warm brownie base topped with a generous scoop of rocky road ice cream, Baby Ruth crumbles, whipped cream, a cherry, and a pirate flag pick. Gold coin candies on the side because of course. It is indulgent, it is silly, it is deeply satisfying, and it photographs like a dream on a dark plate. This is the dessert that makes people at the table go quiet in a good way.

The Whole Map, Laid Out

When everything was on the table together with The Goonies title card on the TV behind it, it genuinely looked like something out of a Goonies fantasy sequence. The skull mugs, the treasure map dip, the custom pizza box, the candy treasure tray with the ring pops and gold coins, all of it together made the kind of movie night where you forget to check your phone.
