The Grease Dinner & Movie Night That Made Me Feel Like I Never Left Rydell High
I have watched Grease more times than I can count. I have also, at various points in my life, fully believed I was Sandy, fully believed I was Rizzo, and briefly believed I could pull off the black pants at the end of the movie. (I could not. Nobody can. That is Sandy’s power and Sandy’s alone.)
This is one of those movies that I did not just grow up watching. I grew up absorbing it. I can quote it start to finish. I know every lyric. I know every beat. When the carnival scene comes on and Danny is looking up at the sky while Sandy is already floating away in Greased Lightning, I still get a little misty and I have absolutely zero shame about that.
So when it came time to do this chapter for Rewind & Dine, I knew two things. One, this menu was going to be an absolute love letter to 1958. And two, I was finally going to show my face on camera, because if Grease can make Sandy transform at a carnival in front of the entire school, I can step in front of a lens in my own kitchen.

Sonny Spiked the Punch
I may have gotten slightly carried away with the drink situation. In my defense, when I saw a light-up punch bowl fountain on TikTok Shop, I knew immediately that it was not a want. It was a need. A Rydell High Prom need.
I made a little Rydell High Prom sign, set the fountain up in the kitchen, filled it with a gorgeous red punch, and named it after the moment in the movie where Sonny sneaks alcohol into the punch at the school dance. Because of course I did. Was the fountain completely necessary? Absolutely not. Was it ridiculous? One hundred percent. Was it awesome? My husband has never looked more impressed.
The punch itself is a fruity, fizzy crowd pleaser with a very optional (but very fun) splash of vodka for the adult version. The full recipe is in the cookbook, and yes, there is a link to the exact fountain I used because you are going to want it.
Stranded at the Drive-In Snack Mix
Danny sang a whole song about being stranded at the drive-in. The least I could do was make snacks worthy of the occasion.
I put together a drive-in snack spread with buttered popcorn in retro red and white boxes, all the classic movie theater candies, and a little letterboard sign with time-accurate 1950s prices because I cannot help myself. Popcorn for a nickel. Candy for a quarter. It was a full scene and I loved every second of it.
The Stranded at the Drive-In Snack Mix in the cookbook has a white chocolate drizzle and an optional pink candy melt drizzle for a little Pink Ladies flair. It comes together fast and it disappears faster.
Danny’s Double Polar Burger and Frenchie’s Fries
Here is where I need to tell you something. I went to the butcher. I got these beautiful premade patties. I thought, as one does, that they would cook down a little. They did not cook down. They did not cook down at all. What I ended up with were two of the most enormous burgers I have ever placed on a bun.
There were zero complaints from my husband. I, a reasonable person who did not want to eat an entire pound of beef in one sitting, quietly removed one patty from my burger and carried on. No regrets from either of us.
Danny orders a polar burger and fries at the diner. These are not diner burgers. These are the burgers the diner wishes it could serve. Juicy, stacked, caramelized onions, American cheese melted into every layer. The patty situation actually worked in our favor because the double stack is genuinely stunning on the plate.
Frenchie’s Fries use a Frosty Palace seasoning salt that is worth making from scratch. The full recipe and three different cooking methods (air fryer, oven, or classic oil fry) are all in the cookbook.
Peachy Keen Milkshake
Yes, I know. Rizzo threw a strawberry shake at Kenickie. I was fully aware of this when I decided to make a peach milkshake instead. But “peachy keen” is one of the most quintessentially Grease phrases in the entire movie, and also, I just really love peaches. So here we are.
This one goes into a tall vintage-style diner glass with an orange striped paper straw, a mountain of whipped cream, a maraschino cherry, and a little peach wedge on the rim. It looks like something straight out of the Frosty Palace. Vanilla ice cream, frozen peaches, a splash of milk. Five minutes and you are done. Jan’s Twinkies with Dessert Wine
There are no photos of this course. There are no photos because we were already deep into the movie and deep into the punch and I was not getting up to find my phone. But it happened. I plated the Twinkies, I poured the wine, and I fully embodied Jan’s energy from the sleepover scene. IYKYK. The cookbook includes both the buy-the-box shortcut version (highly, highly recommended) and a full homemade Twinkie recipe for the overachievers among us.
The Full Spread
There is something really special about a meal that looks like a full set piece and also just tastes like an incredible dinner. This one was not the most elaborate spread I have ever put together for this series. But it was one of the most fun. Red checkered diner paper, a glowing punch fountain, movie theater candy lined up like we were actually at the Frosty Palace, and Grease playing in the background while we ate burgers too big for our buns.
