The Mighty Ducks Dinner and a Movie Night Board

The Mighty Ducks Movie Night Board That Proves You Were Born to Be a Duck

I was nine years old when The Mighty Ducks came out. I don’t remember a ton of the specifics of seeing it for the first time, but I remember the feeling. My brother played roller hockey, so sports movies already had a grip on me, and this one hit different. Coach Bombay, the Flying V, the underdog Ducks who weren’t supposed to win anything. I was completely hooked. I have watched this movie every couple of years since 1992 and I will watch it every couple of years – probably ’til the day I die!

What that movie started in me was real. I became a serious Anaheim Ducks fan as an adult, season tickets and all, and in 2007 I was actually in the arena the night the Ducks won the Stanley Cup. This was back before everyone had a smartphone glued to their hand, so I don’t have a single photo to prove it. But I was there. I felt it. It is one of the greatest days of my entire life, second only to marrying Matt and a few other things I am legally required to rank higher.

Matt and I are both from Southern California and we grew up being shaped by this movie in the same way most kids our generation were. He became a San Jose Sharks fan. I was a die-hard Duck. When we got married, he really wanted us to be on the same team, and honestly? It’s a compromise I was happy to make. We are extremely passionate about hockey, and rooting together is a whole lot more fun than rooting against each other. I will say no more on that subject.

The point is, when I tell you this movie helped shape me into the person I am today, I mean it. It made me love sports. It made me love film. It made me want to be part of something that feels like a team. And it gave us the Flying V, which is maybe the greatest sports movie play call in the history of cinema.

So naturally, when I decided to build a movie night board around it, I went all in.

The Rink Cake Eater Sheet Cake

This was the anchor of the whole board and I am not going to pretend otherwise. I grabbed a half sheet Lemon cake from Trader Joe’s, smoothed out the frosting as best I could, and then drew a hockey rink on top using cake decorating writing tubes. Red lines, blue lines, face-off circles, goal creases at each end in black. It came out so much cuter than I expected and I was genuinely proud of it.

The Cake Eater tag went on top because obviously. If you know, you know. If you don’t know, Adam Banks would like a word with you.

Mighty Ducks Concession Burgers

Every good arena experience starts at the concession stand. For the burgers, you can absolutely make your own patties at home, or you can grab your favorites from a fast food spot on your way to the couch. Zero judgment here. I added little cutouts of the original Mighty Ducks logo on toothpick picks tucked into each bun, and a quote tag that reads: “Hey Goldberg, I bet if the puck was a cheeseburger, you’d stop it.”

Yes, technically that line is from D2. No, I do not care even a little. It is the most Goldberg sentence ever spoken and it belongs on this board.

The Flying V Fries

I used frozen fries, baked them until they were crispy, and arranged them on the plate in a V formation with a Flying V tag in the center. That is genuinely all it took to make Matt stop scrolling on his phone and actually pay attention to what I was building.

If you’re already grabbing burgers from a drive-through, just get the fries there too. The arrangement is the whole point.

Hockey Sticks

Pretzel sticks in a bowl with a Hockey Sticks tag. That is the recipe. Salty, crunchy, shaped exactly like tiny hockey sticks. They disappeared before the movie hit the twenty minute mark.

Soft Hands Gummy Eggs

This is my favorite thing on the entire board and I will not be taking questions.

Trader Joe’s sells a gummy mix that includes little gummy fried eggs in the pack. I pulled those out, put them in a blue bowl, and added a pick that reads: “Soft Hands. You don’t shoot the puck to your teammate. You sail it.”

If you remember the scene where Coach Bombay hands the kids actual eggs on the ice to teach them touch and finesse, and then watches them smash dozens of eggs everywhere while they figure it out, this pick is going to hit you right in the chest. That scene is perfect filmmaking and these gummy eggs are its tribute.

Ding Dongs. Round, dark chocolate, flat on both sides. Hockey Pucks. There is nothing more to explain here.

Team Gatorade and Popcorn

I grabbed green Gatorade because green is the Ducks’ primary color and because nothing says sports night like a Gatorade bottle with a Mighty Ducks logo pick stuck in the label. Filled in the rest of the board with popcorn spilling out of a classic red and white popcorn box, because movie night without popcorn is just sitting in the dark.

The Full Spread

When it all came together on the tray, I just stood there for a second. The rink cake running the length of the board, the concession burgers in their red baskets, the Flying V fries, the Ding Dong hockey pucks lined up like they were waiting at center ice. Matt walked in and immediately said “okay this is really cool” which from him is basically a standing ovation.

We watched the whole thing start to finish. Cheered during the Flying V like we were in the stands. Argued about whether Bombay’s redemption arc holds up. It does, for the record.
