The Shrek Snack Board I Only Made Because Everyone Wouldn’t Stop Asking

Here is a confession that is going to get me in trouble. I had never seen Shrek. Not once. Somehow this movie came out, became a cultural monument, spawned sequels, spawned memes, spawned an entire generation of people who quote it like scripture, and I just never sat down and watched it. So the other day I threw it on while I was grinding away on the exercise bike, fully expecting background noise, and about ten minutes in I understood. I get it now. I get why every single one of you has been in my comments begging me to do a Shrek night.

The references write themselves. The onions, the waffles, the swamp, the potion, all of it. I actually could not stop taking mental notes between pedal strokes. By the time it was over I had a whole board sketched out in my head, and then I got greedy and watched the second one too, so this board pulls from both Shrek and Shrek 2. No regrets. As I do with most of my snack boards, I kept things simple. A lot of premade, a lot of easy assembly, nothing that requires you to block off your whole Saturday. This is meant to be the kind of thing you throw together on a Friday night and still have energy left to actually watch the movie. That said, this one lit a fire under me. I am already planning a full Shrek dinner from scratch, and honestly a Shrek brunch too, so stay tuned for both of those.

An Ogre’s Feast

We had to start where the movie starts. Right at the top of the first film, Shrek is tearing into this feast, and there is a little pumpkin filled with something red and purple and frankly kind of horrifying. I looked at that and thought, that is rotini. That is absolutely a bowl of pasta and I am going to prove it. So I went with multi colored rotini and marinara, and the color from the tri-color pasta gives it that swampy, “what exactly am I looking at” quality that makes it feel straight out of the scene.

The real MVP here is the pumpkin ramekin. I grabbed it last Halloween on a whim and it turned out to be the single most perfect vessel I could have used for this. The pasta spilling out from under that little gold-stemmed lid is exactly the vibe. You can grab the same one right here.

Donkey’s Waffles

You cannot do Shrek without waffles. Donkey loses his mind over waffles – and TBH, I can relate. Normally I would make these from scratch, but t he only waffle maker I own is a Mickey waffle maker. And as much as I love that little guy, a Mickey-shaped waffle at a Shrek party felt like crossing the streams. So I went with store bought Belgian waffles and did not think twice about it. Snacky, easy, done.

Fire Roasted Rat

If you have seen the movie, you know Shrek roasts a rat on a stick like it is fine dining. It is disgusting and I love it. To recreate the roasted-on-a-stick look without, you know, sourcing an actual rat, I hit up my local Fry’s and found these chicken skewers already seasoned and ready to go. They cooked up with this beautiful golden char and skewered up they genuinely read as fire-roasted anything. Easiest swap on the whole board.

Not the Gingerbread Man

I genuinely almost forgot Gingy, which is a crime given that “not my gumdrop buttons” lives in my head rent free. Lord Farquaad interrogating a cookie is peak Shrek, and there was no way this board was going out without him. I kept it easy, because these are just Pepperidge Farm gingerbread men with the faces and details piped on in colored frosting. A little red for the mouth, blue for the eyes, white piping for the trim, and pink candies for the all-important gumdrop buttons. Ten minutes and a lot of giggling and suddenly I had a whole plate of little guys with attitude.

Ogre’s Are Like Onions

“Ogres are like onions. They have layers.” It is maybe the most quoted line in the entire movie, and there was no version of this board that did not include an onion moment. Donkey wanted a parfait. Shrek wanted layers. I wanted something snacky, so I split the difference and went with onion rings. Frozen, air fried, golden, and no I did not make you cry chopping them. Layers without the emotional labor.

Fiona’s Eggs

Fiona frying up eggs is one of those quiet little domestic moments that sticks with you. Since this is a snack board and not a brunch, I did not want to actually fry anything, so I leaned into the candy version and grabbed these gummy fried eggs from Trader Joe’s. They look exactly like sunny-side-up eggs and they are the perfect little sweet bite tucked into a cast iron mini skillet for the full effect.

Shrek’s Mud Bath Pudding

This is the one that made me laugh out loud in my own kitchen. In the second movie there is that mud bath moment, and I could not resist. So right up front on the board I put a bowl of chocolate pudding and stuck a little Shrek into it, arms out, fully relaxed, living his swampy best life. It took two minutes and it is the most joy I have gotten from a bowl of pudding in years.

Spiderweb Cotton Candy

Fiona spins a web out of her hair in the woods, which is one of those wild little Shrek details that I think about more than I should. And since we are right at the front edge of spooky season, the timing could not have been better. I found purple cotton candy at Walmart, piled it up so it looks like a web, and tucked a couple of gummy spiders into it. Wispy, a little creepy, a little pretty. Very Fiona.

The Swamp Martini

Now for the drinks, because the drinks made this board. First up, the Swamp Martini. I kept it non-alcoholic since we are trying to cut back a little, so this is green Hawaiian Punch with a gummy eyeball dropped right in the middle. That is it. The color is so aggressively swamp-green and the eyeball floating there is exactly the right amount of gross.

If you want to make it a real cocktail, go with Midori and pineapple juice and a shot of rum or vodka. Something like an ounce and a half of Midori, three ounces of pineapple juice, and an ounce of your liquor, shaken over ice and strained into the glass. Drop the eyeball in last so it bobs.

The Happily Ever After Potion

And then the showstopper. The Happily Ever After potion from Shrek 2, the one that turns everything upside down. These were somehow both the easiest and the most impressive thing on the whole board. I got these little round potion bottles and set them on light up coasters, and the coasters are sticky so they grab right onto the bottom of the bottle and stay put. Then I printed some Happily Ever After labels I found on Etsy onto sticker sheets and wrapped them around. They turned out flawless. I filled them with blue fruit punch and let the lights do the rest, and that electric blue glow in the dark is everything.

For an adult version, this one wants pineapple juice, blue curaçao, and vodka or rum. Try two ounces of pineapple juice, an ounce of blue curaçao, and an ounce of your liquor over ice. It keeps that gorgeous glowing blue and tastes like a tropical happily ever after.

The Whole Swamp Came Together

Pulling it all onto the board with Shrek up on the big screen behind it was the best part. The green martinis, the glowing blue potions, the pumpkin of pasta, all of it under that Hue-lit glow. This is the kind of spread that makes a movie night feel like an actual event instead of just dinner in front of the TV.
