We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Plate: The Ultimate JAWS Dinner and a Movie Night Menu

There’s something about Jaws that just lingers with you, long after the credits roll and the lights come up. Maybe it’s the way that infamous score crawls under your skin, or maybe it’s the haunting thought that something with way too many teeth is lurking just out of sight. For me? The memory is burned in thanks to Universal Studios’ tram tour – yep, that scene where the shark explodes out of the water and half the tram still screams like it’s the first time. (Guilty.)

I’ll admit, I wasn’t a die-hard Jaws kid. I didn’t grow up watching it on repeat, and you definitely wouldn’t catch me anywhere near the ocean after dark. I have a real, irrational, can’t-even-watch-the-dock-scene-from-Stand-By-Me fear of open water. Sharks? Hard pass. Lake weeds? Even scarier, if you ask me. So naturally, when I decided to do a horror-themed “Dinner & a Movie” series, I knew Jaws had to make the cut, because nothing says Halloween like dinner with a side of deep-seated anxiety!

Why Jaws Is the Perfect Spooky Dinner Party Flick

Some horror movies are just made for background noise while you eat popcorn. But Jaws? This one deserves the full experience. The oceanic colors, the suspense, the legendary one-liners – honestly, the whole movie is a mood. And it’s not just scary. It’s iconic. We’re talking about the blueprint for every summer blockbuster, every “don’t go in the water” meme, and every movie night that ends with someone humming DUN DUN… DUN DUN…

So I built an entire menu around those vibes. Think oceanic blues, a touch of gore, a dash of camp, and food that’s actually delicious (because I’m not serving anyone real chum). Get ready for a “dinner and a horror movie” feast so good, you’ll be inviting your friends over for round two.

And hey, if you want ten more menus just as wild, creepy, and fun, you’ll find them all in my Bloody Good Dinners Cookbook. Seriously, don’t just watch the movie – eat the movie.

The JAWS-Inspired Dinner & a Movie Menu

Appetizer: Chum Bucket Shrimp Ceviche

Let’s kick things off with a nod to the most infamous snack in the ocean: chum. But don’t worry, I promise this is the only bucket of “chum” you’ll ever want seconds of. This shrimp ceviche is bright, citrusy, a little spicy, and perfectly beachy. I serve it up in adorable metal buckets with lime wedges, because presentation is half the fun and nothing says “horror movie night” like eating your appetizer out of something that looks like it came off Quint’s boat.

Pro tip: Extra lime and lots of fresh cilantro. If you’re serving a crowd, double the recipe – you’ll be amazed how fast it disappears.

Appetizer: We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Bowl Salsa

This is my favorite way to work in a visual gag. A big bowl of fresh, spicy red salsa, surrounded by a sea of blue corn chips, bonus points if you plant a chip vertically in the middle so it looks like a shark fin peeking out of the “water.” (It’s dorky, but trust me, people eat it up. Literally.)

Salsa is a must for any Halloween menu or scary movie night – it’s easy, everyone loves it, and you can make it ahead of time. I like mine with extra tomato, red onion, and jalapeño, but honestly, use your favorite recipe and just play up the theme with the chips.

Main Course: Quint’s Catch of the Day Fish Tacos

You know Quint, the crusty, monologue-loving fisherman who delivers one of the most iconic speeches in movie history? If he was making dinner for the crew, you know he’d be frying up the freshest fish he could catch (well, before the shark gets it).

These crispy fish tacos are the heart of the meal. Perfectly golden fish, crunchy slaw, a squeeze of lime, and a quick crema drizzle, these are tacos worthy of a summer blockbuster. You can use cod, halibut, or whatever fresh white fish you love (I go with what’s on sale at the market).

The best part? They’re surprisingly easy, but look SO impressive on a platter. Serve them with all the fixings and watch your friends load up their plates like they’re prepping for a day at Amity Island.

Sides: Shark Bite Esquites & Rip Current Rice

No horror movie menu is complete without killer sides (pun absolutely intended). I went with Mexican-inspired flavors here, because they pair perfectly with seafood and keep the vibe summery and fresh.

  • Shark Bite Esquites: Sweet corn, creamy mayo, cotija cheese, lime, and a little sprinkle of chili powder. It’s elote off the cob, with a bite. Serve it in little ramekins, and if you’re feeling fancy, top with a “bite mark” of extra hot sauce for drama.
  • Rip Current Rice: Bright, fluffy cilantro-lime rice. Fresh, herby, and just a little zesty, like the ocean air, if the ocean air wasn’t full of teeth.

Dessert: Shark Attack Cake Cups

I live for a dramatic dessert. These cake cups are as extra as the movie itself – layered blue cake, whipped “waves,” a swirl of red “blood,” and a gummy shark on top. They’re cute, creepy, and incredibly fun to make (even more fun to eat).

This dessert is always the star of the show. Kids lose their minds for the sharks; adults fight over the last cup. That’s a win in my book.

Cocktail: Blood in the Water

You know I wasn’t skipping a cocktail. This one’s bold, a little sweet, and absolutely over-the-top. Blue liqueur, cherry “blood” syrup, a lemon wedge, and a shark candy for garnish. If you want to make a mocktail version for the kids (or yourself – no judgment), just swap in blue sports drink or lemonade and skip the booze.

Pro tip: Don’t hold back on the syrup. The more dramatic, the better.

Behind the Menu: Why I Love a Good Scary Movie Feast

Honestly, I used to think “dinner and a horror movie” was just an excuse to eat popcorn and pretend I wasn’t hiding behind a blanket. But turning every movie into a full-blown culinary event? Game changer. It makes every movie night feel special, memorable, and just a little magical (even if the magic is mostly food coloring and a bucket of ceviche).

Plus, I love that moment when someone recognizes the reference, the “wait, is this supposed to be chum?” gasp, the laughter over shark fin chips, the photo ops with the shark attack cakes. Those are the memories that last longer than any jump scare.

How to Throw Your Own JAWS-Themed Horror Movie Night

  • Set the scene: Blue and red everywhere, ocean vibes, and some Jaws soundtrack in the background for instant tension.
  • Print the menu: Guests love knowing what’s coming next – and it doubles as a cute keepsake.
  • Serve in style: Mini buckets, gummy sharks, and fun garnishes take things from basic to unforgettable.
  • Encourage costumes or themed outfits: Hawaiian shirts, lifeguard tees, or just lots of blue.
  • Lean into the drama: Serve dessert right as the big shark scene hits. Maximum screams, maximum laughs.
