Christmas Is My Love Language: The Story Behind A Magical Christmas Dinner and a Movie
I did not wait long to make a Christmas cookbook.
The Magical Dinner and a Movie was my first. And then, almost immediately, I made this one. Because Christmas is hands down my favorite time of year and I could not resist. That is the whole origin story right there. I am a person who starts watching Home Alone the moment I decide it is officially the season, and I have no apologies about that.
What I will say, with the benefit of time and perspective, is that this cookbook deserves more than I gave it the first time around. I was still learning how to do all of this when I made these meals. The food was good. The recipes are real and tested and some of them carry more personal history than almost anything else I have published. But the content around them was not yet what it should be. I am fixing that this year. Every movie in this cookbook is getting the full treatment it deserves, and if you have been following along for a while you are going to see this one come to life in a way it has not before.
The reason I care so much about getting it right is because this cookbook is not just about Christmas movies. It is about Christmas. My grandmother’s meatballs. My grandfather’s biscuits and gravy. The specific, irreplaceable feeling of watching a black and white film with people you love in a room full of everyone you belong to. That is what I was trying to capture when I made this. I think I am finally ready to do it justice.
My official start of the season is the first Home Alone watch. Every year. Non-negotiable. The moment that movie goes on, it is Christmas in this house. It has been that way for as long as I can remember and it will be that way until further notice. If you feel the same way, you are going to love what that chapter looks like.
But the movie that sits closest to my heart in this whole cookbook is It’s a Wonderful Life. My grandparents loved that film. Watching it means watching it through their eyes now, which is a particular kind of bittersweet that only the best Christmas movies can pull off. The recipes in that chapter are my grandmother Mary’s. Her meatballs specifically. Every year our family would get together and make a huge batch, and everyone would take some home. They freeze beautifully, they appear at every holiday, and they are called Mary’s Meatballs in this cookbook because there is no other name for them. Her famous BBQ sauce is in there too. I grew up eating both and I am not sure I will ever stop.
And then there is the biscuits and gravy. Which sounds like a strange thing to put in a Christmas cookbook until you understand that it started with my grandfather, got refined by my grandmother on my mother’s side who made it entirely her own, and has been further developed by me into what I now consider my star recipe. Three generations of the same dish, each one making it a little bit better. My grandfather used canned milk. My grandmother switched to whole milk. I still use whole milk but I add a little cream and my secret ingredient, which is powdered sugar. The real secret though, the one that makes the whole thing work, is using bacon grease instead of sausage in the roux. The flavor is on a completely different level. That recipe lives in the Miracle on 34th Street chapter and I am unreasonably proud of it.

It’s a Wonderful Life — Mary’s Meatballs. My grandmother’s recipe, named for her, made every year by our whole family together. Her BBQ sauce alongside them. This chapter is the most personal thing I have put in any cookbook and it is the reason this movie will always mean more to me than I can fully explain.
