I did not grow up a Marvel person. I know, I know. But hear me out.

When COVID hit and my husband and I found ourselves with absolutely nowhere to go and nothing but time, we did what any reasonable couple does in a crisis. We started a Marvel chronological marathon from the very beginning. And somewhere between Iron Man and Thor, I became completely, embarrassingly obsessed.

The Avengers holds a special place for me because of one very specific scene. After saving the entire world, what do these heroes do? They sit down for shawarma. Just like that. Casually. In a destroyed restaurant. No big deal.

I love them for that.

The Dish That Started Everything

Here is a little story about shawarma and my husband. When we first started dating, he was what I will politely call a picky eater. Mediterranean food was my absolute favorite, and I could not get him to try it to save my life.

Then one night, our friend invited us to dinner. This is not just any friend. This is the kind of cook where if he calls and says “come over, I am making dinner,” you cancel whatever you had going on and you go. He made chicken shawarma completely from scratch, and it was the single best thing I had ever put in my mouth. My husband took one bite and looked at me like I had been holding out on him his entire life.

Mediterranean food is now his favorite.

I have been chasing that shawarma ever since. And I will say, with full confidence and only a little bit of humility, that mine is better now. The Post Battle Shawarma in this cookbook is the recipe I make when I am cooking for someone for the first time. It is the most requested dish in my rotation. And cooking it trompo-style, stacked on a vertical skewer and roasted until the edges are charred and the inside is impossibly juicy, is nothing short of a religious experience.

Let’s Talk About That Tesseract

This drink almost broke me. I wanted it to actually glow. I ordered light-up coasters, hunted down blue curaçao, and experimented with Pop Rocks on the rim until it was exactly right. The result is a cocktail that looks like something straight out of S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters and it crackles when you drink it. There is also a full mocktail version so everyone at the table gets in on it.

Hawkeye’s Hummus Deserves Its Own Moment

I almost did not include hummus because I thought it was too simple. Then I drew a bullseye on it with sun-dried tomatoes and black olives and suddenly it became the most photographed thing on the table. Never underestimate a good appetizer with a theme.

The Pie Is a Showstopper and I Will Not Apologize

The Avengers Assemble Pie is a mixed berry pie with a silver luster dust Avengers symbol on top, and it is genuinely one of the most impressive things I have ever put on a table. The secret is baking the symbol separately and painting it with luster dust mixed into vodka. The vodka evaporates. The drama stays.
