💫 Buy N Large Chicken Pot Pie Cups (Inspired by WALL-E)

Jump to Recipe

When we picked WALL-E for movie night, I knew one thing for sure:

I was going to reference those iconic, slightly unsettling Buy N Large meal cups.

You know the ones—clear plastic, labeled with corporate branding, sloshing around like some futuristic nutritional goop. Not exactly mouthwatering. But the concept? The opportunity for creativity? Absolutely irresistible.

The only problem?
I wasn’t about to blend a perfectly good pot pie.

So I did what I do best—I reimagined it.

I turned the concept into something cozy, comforting, and totally dinner-party-worthy.
These Buy N Large Chicken Pot Pie Cups are a deconstructed twist on the classic: a creamy chicken and veggie filling layered into clear cups, topped with golden puff pastry “crust pieces,” and finished with a flaky puff pastry “straw” sticking out like you’re sipping it straight from the Axiom cafeteria.

🥧 But wait—my husband said he hated pot pie.

When we first started dating, I made it one night thinking, “Who doesn’t love pot pie?”
He took one look at it and said, “Yeah… I’m not really a pot pie guy.”

Challenge accepted.

I tweaked the filling. Made it extra creamy. Seasoned it with thyme. Added crispy puff pastry instead of a soggy top layer. And guess what?

He loved it.

Now it’s one of his most requested dinners—proof that sometimes the food just needs a little glow-up. Or in this case… a custom label and a sci-fi storyline.

✨ How I Made the Buy N Large Cups

This part was SO much fun and totally worth the extra five minutes.

I wanted the full WALL-E vibe, so I made my own Buy N Large labels, printed them out on waterproof sticker paper, and stuck them onto clear cups.

Here’s exactly what I used:

  • Clear 16 oz plastic cups – [Link to Amazon listing]
  • Printable waterproof label paper – [Link to my favorite brand]
  • Custom Buy N Large label design – [Click here to download my free digital file]

Once the labels were printed and trimmed, I just stuck one on each cup. Boom—instantly futuristic, thematically ridiculous, and incredibly cute on the table. It’s the kind of detail that makes the whole night feel immersive.

You can definitely serve the pot pie in a bowl if you’re keeping things simple, but if you’re leaning into the WALL-E theme? These cups make it.

Supplies Needed for Buy N Large Pot Pies in a Cup

🧁 What’s Actually in the Cup?

No powdered meal slurry here. This is real-deal comfort food:

  • A quick homemade filling with butter, onion, carrot, celery, shredded chicken, flour, chicken broth, and milk
  • Seasoned with salt, pepper, and thyme—nothing fancy, just nostalgic
  • Served warm in a cup and topped with golden puff pastry pieces
  • Bonus: I baked a few pastry “straws” and stuck them in the top, just like the Axiom drink cups

This is one of those dishes that feels clever, cozy, and completely over-the-top in the best way.

If this was on the Axiom, they’d never come back to Earth.

Every bite inspired by the story.

Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ½ yellow onion finely diced
  • 2 medium carrots peeled + diced
  • 2 celery stalks diced
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth or veggie broth for meatless
  • ¾ cup whole milk or half-and-half
  • 2 cups cooked chicken shredded (rotisserie shortcut wins again)
  • Salt pepper, and dried thyme to taste

For the puff pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry thawed
  • 1 egg beaten (for egg wash)
  • Optional: extra puff pastry for the straw
  • Optional garnish: crushed butter crackers pie crust crumbles, or fresh thyme leaves

Instructions

  • Make the Filling: Sauté onion, carrots, and celery in butter until soft (about 7 mins). Add garlic, then stir in flour and cook 1 min more. Slowly whisk in broth and milk. Stir until thick and creamy. Add shredded chicken and season with salt, pepper, and thyme. Set aside.
  • Bake the Puff Pastry Layers: Preheat oven to 400°F. Cut puff pastry into small rectangles or squares (1–2 inches wide) and lay flat on parchment. Brush with egg wash and bake for 10–12 mins until golden, puffed, and crisp. Optional: twist extra strips into “straws” and bake separately.
  • Assemble the Cups:
  • In each clear cup:
  • Start with a scoop of warm filling
  • Add a piece or two of puff pastry
  • Repeat layers until the cup is full (ending with filling or pastry—your call)
  • Stick a puff pastry straw on top like you’re sipping it Axiom-style
  • Optional garnish: sprinkle of pie crust crumbles or fresh thyme, and sci-fi sticker on the cup
