The Captain America: The First Avenger Dinner and Movie Night That Proves All-American Can Actually Be Exciting

When my husband and I started our Marvel marathon during COVID, I went in skeptical. I had never been a superhero movie person. Give me a period piece or a romantic comedy any day of the week. But somewhere between Iron Man and Thor I was a convert, and by the time Captain America: The First Avenger rolled around, I was all in.

There is something so genuinely sweet about Steve Rogers that gets me every time. He was just a scrawny kid from Brooklyn who wanted to do the right thing. The super soldier serum was almost beside the point. He was already the guy. And honestly? That hits differently every rewatch.

So for this dinner and movie night, I wanted a menu that felt like Steve himself: classic, all-American, a little nostalgic, and maybe slightly underestimated. I could have done a cheeseburger and called it a day. But I don’t roll like that. This menu has a proper fried chicken situation, a beer cheese dip pulled straight from one of the best scenes in the movie, a drink you literally inject yourself, and a cheesecake that my husband would absolutely choose over me in a bracket. No generic food blog dinner. Just really, really good food.

The Super Soldier Serum

I knew from day one that whatever drink I made for this menu had to involve the serum somehow. But I also didn’t want to just hand someone a shot of blue liquid and call it a night. I wanted a real drink. Something you could actually nurse through a two-hour movie while Steve Rogers is out there punching HYDRA agents and being genuinely the most earnest human being in the entire MCU.

So we built it in layers. Cranberry juice gives you that deep red base. Lemon-lime soda adds the fizz. And the blue curaçao, or blue sports drink if you’re going mocktail, lives in a plastic syringe that you plunge into the glass yourself. The colors swirl and it is genuinely dramatic and I love every second of it. Served in a 250ml beaker with a red and white striped straw and a Captain America shield topper, this drink does exactly what it promises. It looks like you know what you are doing.

Do You Fondue? Beer Cheese Dip and Victory Rations Pretzel Bites

If you know, you know. That scene where Steve casually drops “Do you fondue?” to Peggy . Steve Rogers says it completely innocently, with zero awareness of how it sounds, and it is one of the funniest unintentional moments in the whole movie. I could not let it go without putting it on the table.

The beer cheese comes together in about 15 minutes and tastes like something you would wait in a very long line for. Tillamook cheddar, a splash of light beer, a little Dijon for depth, smoked paprika, garlic powder. Smooth and sharp and completely irresistible. I served it in a little ruffled white bowl surrounded by soft pretzel bites and it looked so good I almost felt bad eating it. Almost.

The pretzel bites are the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure recipe. Make them from scratch if you’re feeling ambitious. Use refrigerated biscuit dough if you want them done in 30 minutes. Or grab a bag of premade pretzel bites from the store because life is short and the movie starts at 7. All three are completely valid. All three will be gone before the opening credits finish.

The All-American Fried Chicken

What is more all-American than a proper fried chicken dinner? Not a cheeseburger. Not a hot dog. Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and a corn situation that I have been making at summer BBQs for years and that people genuinely lose their minds over every single time.

The chicken marinates overnight in buttermilk, pickle juice, and hot sauce. It comes out incredibly juicy on the inside and perfectly craggy and golden on the outside. I finish mine with a warm hot honey drizzle right before serving and it takes the whole thing from great to actually embarrassing because you cannot stop eating it.

Brooklyn Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes

The Brooklyn Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes are rich, silky, and the kind of comforting that makes you feel like everything is going to be okay. The secret is steaming the potatoes dry after draining them and warming your butter and cream before adding them in. Glossy and luxurious and exactly what a guy who spent 70 years frozen in the Arctic deserved when he finally woke up.

Avengers Street Corn Succotash

The corn succotash gets its char from letting the frozen corn sit completely undisturbed in a screaming hot pan before you stir it. Then you add butter, bell peppers, onion, jalapeño if you’re feeling bold, and a squeeze of lime at the end. A little cotija on top and you have a side dish that somehow manages to upstage everything else on the table. People always ask me for this recipe at cookouts. Now it is officially in the cookbook.

Captain’s Shield Cheesecake

This is the recipe I need to talk about. Not just because it looks incredible, which it does. But because of where it came from.

My husband is obsessed with cheesecake. Given a choice between cheesecake and most other things in life, cheesecake wins. I say this with love and also a little competitive energy. His dad’s girlfriend, who we call bonus mom because she has fully earned that title, made us an unbelievable cheesecake when they came to visit us for our first Christmas in our new house. She and I made it together in my kitchen and it was one of those afternoons that just feels like exactly what life is supposed to be.

My version keeps the spirit of hers with one key swap: I ditched the traditional graham cracker crust for crushed Biscoff cookies. If you have never made a Biscoff crust, please stop what you are doing and fix that today. It tastes like caramel and cinnamon decided to become a cookie and then become a crust and the whole thing is just wildly good.

The filling is classic and creamy, baked low and slow in a water bath so the top stays smooth and crack-free. Once it is fully chilled you build the shield. Rings of sliced strawberries. A circle of blueberries. A whipped cream star in the center. Captain America’s shield, in cheesecake form. It looks like you spent hours on it. You did not.

We were sneaking bites straight from the fridge all week. No regrets. My husband would have finished it in a single sitting if I had let him.

The Full Spread

When it all came together on the counter I genuinely stood back and felt proud of myself in a way that does not happen often enough. The tiered tray with the fried chicken on top and the pretzel bites below. The cheesecake on its glass stand. The two beakers with their syringes sticking out at dramatic angles. The menu card. The matching plates. Steve Rogers himself would have felt like this was worth fighting for.

Movie Night in Progress

There is something about watching Captain America: The First Avenger with a table full of food in front of you that makes the whole thing feel like an event. The transformation scene hits different when you have a syringe drink in your hand. I am just saying.
