Elf Dinner and a Movie Night
If there is one movie that guarantees instant Christmas joy in this house, it is Elf. This is our third year doing an Elf themed dinner and a movie night, and somehow it just keeps getting better. Maybe it’s the twinkle lights or maybe it is the way Buddy the Elf commits to everything with his whole glitter covered heart. Or maybe I just relate a little too strongly to someone who gets excited about syrup. Either way, this night always brings the magic.
Elf is silly. It is sweet. It is nostalgic. And it gives you so many opportunities to lean all the way in with themed food. That is my kind of holiday movie night.
This year we created a full Elf inspired menu featuring two appetizers, a comfort filled entree, a glowing green drink and a dessert that would make Buddy himself proud. Everything was playful and whimsical while still being totally delicious. Christmas movie night ideas should make you smile and this one delivered.

Before we jump into the recipes, here is a look at what we served for our Elf dinner night.
• You Smell Like Beef and Cheese (salami and cheese trees)
• It Looks Like a Christmas Tree (pizza dough mozzarella trees with garlic herb butter)
• Mary’s Spaghetti (my slightly sweet syrup kissed sauce that my husband raved about for hours)
• The Four Main Food Groups Drink (a bright green mocktail with a candy skewer)
• Buddy’s Spaghetti Cupcakes (the cutest dessert chaos you have ever seen)
And because I know many of you host your own Elf nights every December, I also included a free printable menu at the bottom of this post to bring the whole experience together.
The Story of the Night
Every year when we sit down to watch Elf, the energy in the room changes. The lights get brighter, the colors feel warmer and we immediately find ourselves quoting the movie before it even starts. It is impossible not to smile when that opening title pops up on the screen.
This night felt especially nostalgic. We turned on our Philips Hue lights to match the movie so the whole room glowed in Buddy approved green. We set out festive treats, propped up our Elf themed menu and filled the table with food that made us laugh as much as it made us hungry. Elf is pure joy wrapped in Christmas magic and this menu reflects exactly that.
It was simple, comforting and fun, exactly what a Christmas movie night should be.

Elf Movie Night Menu
A full roundup of the food and drinks we made for our Elf dinner ideas. You can find the printable menu to recreate this meal at the bottom of this post!
• Appetizer 1 You Smell Like Beef and Cheese Salami Trees
• Appetizer 2 It Looks Like a Christmas Tree Pizza Dough Trees
• Main Course Mary’s Spaghetti with meatballs
• Drink The Four Main Food Groups Mocktail
• Dessert Buddy’s Spaghetti Cupcakes
Let’s break it all down.
You Smell Like Beef and Cheese Salami Trees
These adorable little appetizers are the easiest thing you will make all season but they look so festive on a Christmas movie night platter. All you need are salami slices, toothpicks and tiny cheese stars.
Ingredients
• 3 salami slices per tree
• Toothpicks
• Small piece of cheddar or mozzarella for the star
Instructions
- Take one slice of salami and cut a small slit from the outer edge toward the center. You are not removing anything, just creating an opening.
- Use your hands to curve and roll the salami into a small cylindrical tree section, allowing the slit to overlap slightly so it holds its shape.
- Poke a toothpick through the pointed top of the salami piece and thread it down through the overlapped slit. This secures the shape.
- Repeat with two more salami slices and stack them on the same toothpick so each tree has three layers.
- Use a tiny cookie cutter to punch out a small cheese star and place it on top.
- Arrange on a platter and serve.
These fit perfectly on a platter and they are such a fun nod to Buddy’s famous line.

It Looks Like a Christmas Tree Pizza Dough Trees
These are warm, cheesy, garlicky and absolutely adorable. They are also beginner friendly and use store bought dough, which makes Christmas movie night even easier.
Here’s what you will need – 2 sheets of pizza dough, sliced mozzarella cheese (the kind you use in sandwiches), butter, garlic and parsley.
Quick Instructions
- Lay out one sheet of pizza dough.
- Add a single layer of shredded mozzarella on top.
- Place a second sheet of pizza dough over the cheese.
- Slice into long strips.
- Accordion fold each strip back and forth to form a Christmas tree shape, then thread a skewer through the center.
- Bake at the temperature on your dough package until golden brown.
- Melt butter in a pan, add minced garlic and cook until fragrant. Stir in parsley.
- Brush the garlic herb butter over the warm trees.
- Add a tiny mozzarella star if you want extra charm.
This recipe should make 8 to 10 trees depending on the size of your strips. Since I am only feeding 2 people, I used one sheet cut in half and made five.

check out our elf menu from last year?
If you tried my Elf dinner last year, you’ll notice this one looks a little different. I wanted to mix things up and bring even more Buddy style chaos to the table. You can find last year’s Elf Dinner and a Movie blog here if you want to compare the menus.
Mary’s Spaghetti with Meatballs
Buddy makes spaghetti for Mary and adds syrup, so of course we had to honor that scene. I know adding syrup to pasta sounds wild, but trust me. Many tomato sauce recipes call for a pinch of sugar to balance the acidity. We use such a tiny amount of syrup that it acts the same way while keeping the Elf theme alive. It does not make the sauce sweet. It simply rounds out the flavor and adds the smallest hint of warmth. My husband went on and on about how good this sauce was.
Ingredients
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 small onion, diced
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 2 cans crushed tomatoes
• 2 tablespoons tomato paste
• 1 teaspoon dried basil
• 1 teaspoon dried oregano
• Pinch of red chili flakes
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 1 teaspoon syrup (yes, syrup)
• Frozen or homemade meatballs
• Cooked spaghetti
• Fresh basil and parmesan for serving
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened.
- Stir in the garlic and cook for one minute.
- Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, chili flakes, salt and pepper.
- Bring the sauce to a gentle bubble.
- Stir in the teaspoon of syrup.
- Add the frozen meatballs straight into the sauce.
- Simmer uncovered for 45 minutes until the sauce thickens and the meatballs are heated through.
- Serve over cooked spaghetti with parmesan and basil.
It is warm, comforting and perfect for a cozy Christmas evening.

The Four Main Food Groups Drink
Every Elf dinner needs a bright green drink and this one could not be easier. It is kid friendly, festive and fun to decorate. You can also turn it into a cocktail for adults.
Ingredients
• Green Hawaiian Punch
• Ice
• Yellow sanding sugar for the rim
• Christmas gummy bears
• Nerd clusters
• Toothpicks or small skewers
Instructions
- Dip the rim of your glass in water, then in yellow sanding sugar.
- Fill the glass with ice and pour in the green punch.
- Thread gummy bears and Nerd clusters onto a skewer and rest it across the top.
- Serve immediately.
Optional Cocktail Version
Add a shot of vodka, coconut rum or tequila to taste.
This drink glows beautifully under Christmas lights and looks especially magical next to the TV while the movie plays.
Buddy’s Spaghetti Cupcakes
Dessert should always be fun and these were a hit. They look exactly like Buddy’s chaotic bowl of spaghetti but taste like a holiday cupcake.
Fun Assembly Guide
- Start with baked cupcakes from a box mix. You can tint the batter green for extra Buddy energy.
- Fill a piping bag with vanilla frosting and snip the tip.
- Squeeze the frosting onto the cupcakes in long, loopy lines to mimic spaghetti noodles.
- Top with holiday sprinkles, M&Ms, mini marshmallows and chopped mini Pop Tarts.
- Chill until ready to serve.
These are adorable and instantly recognizable. They photograph beautifully for your Elf themed food spread.

Elf Movie Night Vibes
The magic of this night always comes from the atmosphere. We used our Philips Hue lights to wash the room in green and blue tones, and it made everything feel extra immersive. We set out a full spread on the coffee table, played Christmas music while cooking and let the room glow while we ate and watched the movie.
Elf is a movie that reminds you to lean into joy, so that is exactly what this dinner does.
