The Friends Snack Board That Almost Broke My Kitchen (Board #20, Baby)

I grew up on Friends. Like, on it. I was the kid watching it during its actual primetime run, quoting it in the hallway at school, fully convinced I was Monica in my bones. Thanksgiving was always my favorite holiday, and Friends Thanksgiving episodes were appointment television in our house. Every single year. So when I hit board number 20 and started thinking about what show deserved this milestone, it was never really a question.

The harder question was how to make it cohesive. Friends is ten seasons of iconic moments. Where do you even start? I sat with it for a while after the Office board went absolutely insane online, and I kept coming back to the same answer: Thanksgiving. So many of the best Friends food moments live in those episodes, and once I started pulling the thread, this whole board came together in a way that genuinely surprised me.

Twenty boards. I cannot believe we are here. This one had to be special, and I think we did it.

The Monica Turkey (Except It’s a Chicken and She Has Accessories)

If you know, you know. Season 5, Episode 8. Monica puts the Thanksgiving turkey on her head to cheer up Chandler, complete with a fez and giant sunglasses, and it works so well that it becomes the moment Chandler realizes he loves her. It is one of the most iconic scenes in the entire series, and I was not going to do a Friends board without honoring it.

I used a rotisserie chicken because, practically speaking, a full raw turkey was not happening on this board. I cut the top off a red solo cup to make the fez, found the most aggressively yellow sunglasses I could, and placed her right in the center of the board like the queen she is. The parsley bed underneath was Monica’s touch. She would have insisted on the garnish.

Ross’s Famous Moist Maker Sandwich

Hand holding a thick layered Moist Maker sandwich from Friends with turkey, stuffing, cranberry, and a Ross character flag on a toothpick

Season 5, Episode 9. Ross brings his prized Thanksgiving leftover sandwich to work, someone in the office eats it out of the breakroom fridge, and Ross has a complete breakdown that gets him fired. His description of this sandwich is one of the funniest things this show has ever produced. “It’s the only good thing going on in my life right now.” I feel that, Ross. I feel that deeply.

Here is how I made mine. Brioche sandwich bread, lightly toasted so nothing gets soggy. A layer of mashed potatoes I made the night before specifically for this board, a thin layer of stuffing (I used Stovetop, which felt appropriately nostalgic and honestly kind of perfect), then turkey tenders from my local butcher sliced thin. The middle slice of bread gets dipped in gravy. That is the Moist Maker. That is the whole point. Then another layer of mashed potatoes, another layer of turkey, and homemade cranberry chutney before the final slice of bread.

For the gravy: equal parts butter and flour to make a roux, then slowly whisk in chicken broth and season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. I served extra on the side because the sandwich should be controlled, not soggy, but the dipping option is there.

Thanksgiving is my all-time favorite holiday and I make leftover sandwiches every single year. This one topped everything. I am not exaggerating.

Joey’s Meatball Sub (The Greatest Sandwich in the Entire World)

Friends snack board full layout pulled back view showing entire round wooden board on granite countertop with peonies

Joey Tribbiani does not share food. This is established canon. In Season 10, Episode 9, he describes a meatball sub as “the greatest sandwich in the entire world,” and the way Matt LeBlanc delivers that line is something I think about more than I should.

Italian meatballs, marinara, hoagie roll, melted mozzarella. My husband’s favorite thing on the entire board, which tracks completely. There is nothing complicated about a great meatball sub and that is exactly the point. Joey would not overthink it and neither did I.

Chandler’s Stolen Cheesecake

Friends snack board close-up showing Rachel's trifle with raspberries, Chandler's stolen cheesecake label, You're My Lobster gummy lobsters, and We Were on a Break Kit Kats

Season 7, Episodes 11 and 12. A cheesecake is accidentally delivered to Chandler and Joey’s apartment instead of the one downstairs. Chandler eats some. Then Rachel eats some. Then the whole thing falls on the hallway floor and the two of them get down on their hands and knees with forks and eat it off the ground because it is just that good.

I put cheesecake on the board. I did not drop it on the floor first, but I respect that they did.

Rachel’s Trifle

Also in the image above. Season 6, Episode 9, the one where everyone has to tell the truth. Rachel is assigned to make the traditional English trifle for Thanksgiving dessert. A page of the cookbook is stuck together, so she ends up combining the trifle recipe with a shepherd’s pie recipe. The result has layers of ladyfingers, jam, and ground beef with peas. Joey loves it. Everyone else suffers quietly.

I went with a traditional trifle because I wanted it to actually be edible: ladyfingers, fresh raspberries, custard, whipped cream, and more raspberries on top. The gag still lands with the label. You could absolutely go full shepherd’s pie hybrid if you want the authentic Rachel experience. Your guests, your call.

Chandler’s Traditional Thanksgiving Feast

Season 8, Episode 9. Monica is trying to make everyone’s perfect Thanksgiving, and Chandler’s request is tomato soup, grilled cheese, and Funyuns. That’s it. That’s the whole thing. It’s exactly as funny as it sounds and I love him for it.

I made mini tomato soup shooters, mini grilled cheese cut into bite-sized pieces, and put a pile of Funyuns right alongside them. They disappeared first. Every time.

Ross’s Lumpy Mashed Potatoes

Same episode. Ross asks Monica to make the mashed potatoes with the lumps. She tells him that’s not how they’re supposed to be made. She makes them anyway, lumps and all, because that is who Monica is. I made mine with plenty of butter, chives on top, and enough lumps to make Ross proud.

Phoebe’s Nestle Toulouse Cookies

Season 7, Episode 24. Phoebe’s grandmother allegedly passed down a secret family cookie recipe. Turns out it was just the recipe from the back of the Toll House bag, which she called “Nestle Toulouse” in a French accent, and it is one of the most perfectly written jokes in the entire series.

I used my own famous chocolate chip cookie recipe for these, the one I have been making for years and that has become my most-requested recipe. It is not from the back of a bag. But Phoebe doesn’t need to know that.

The Best Ever Chocolate Chip Cookies

5 from 1 vote
Crispy on the bottom, soft and gooey in the middle — the secret is the fridge. The longer they chill, the better they get. This recipe has been around for 30 years and it shows.
Prep Time:20 minutes
chill time:1 hour
Total Time:45 minutes
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Keyword: best chocolate chip cookie recipe, chewy chocolate chip cookies, chocolate chip cookies, classic cookie recipe, dark chocolate chip cookies, easy cookie recipe, homemade cookies, soft chocolate chip cookies
Servings: 24 cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cups unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cups brown sugar packed
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoons baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cups dark chocolate chips
  • 1 cups mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Mix dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, lightly whisk together 3 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoons baking soda, 0.5 teaspoons baking powder, and 0.5 teaspoons salt. Set aside.
  • Cream butter and sugars: In a large mixing bowl, cream 1 cups unsalted butter, room temperature, 1 cups granulated sugar, and 1 cups brown sugar, packed together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Add 2 large eggs, room temperature one at a time, then add 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  • Combine wet and dry: Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until JUST combined. Do not overmix — this is the key to a tender cookie.
  • Fold in chocolate chips: Fold in 1 cups dark chocolate chips and 1 cups mini chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  • Scoop and chill: Scoop dough into 2-3 tablespoon balls onto a cookie sheet. Cover and refrigerate for at least 60 minutes
  • — up to 72 hours. The longer they chill, the deeper the flavor and the better the texture. Do not skip this step.
  • Preheat oven: When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 375°F.
  • Bake: Bake for 10 minutes
  • . You want the bottoms to just start to turn golden brown. The tops will look almost underdone — pull them anyway. They will continue baking on the hot pan and that is exactly how you get that perfect combination of crispy bottom and soft, gooey center.
  • Rest and cool: Let the cookies sit on the pan for 5 minutes before moving to a wire rack to cool completely. If you can wait that long.
  • The chill is non-negotiable. One hour is the minimum. Twenty-four hours gives you noticeably better flavor. Seventy-two hours gives you the best cookie you have ever eaten. Plan ahead if you can. I always make a double batch and freeze one whole batch so we always have fresh baked cookies when we want them them.
Don't overbake. Pulling them when they look underdone is the whole secret. Trust the process.

You’re My Lobster Gummies + We Were on a Break Kit Kats

Phoebe tells Ross that he and Rachel are lobsters, because lobsters mate for life and you can always tell a lobster couple because they walk around holding claws. Season 2, Episode 14. One of the most quoted lines in the history of television.

Red gummy lobsters in a little white bowl. Perfect. Done.

The Kit Kats are for Ross, specifically for his Season 3 spiral after the break with Rachel. I am not taking sides. I am just putting candy on a board.

Central Perk Caramel Latte + Ross’s Margaritas

Friends snack board full layout pulled back view showing entire round wooden board on granite countertop with peonies

No Friends board is complete without Central Perk. I got the official Central Perk mug and made a caramel latte with whipped cream and a caramel drizzle. It looked exactly right and tasted even better.

The margaritas are Ross’s. They come up multiple times throughout the series, most memorably in Season 7 when he makes them at Thanksgiving, and they absolutely belonged on this board. Here is the recipe I used:

Ross’s Margaritas (Pitcher)
2 cups silver tequila
1 cup fresh lime juice (please squeeze it yourself, do not use the bottle)
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup triple sec or Cointreau
1/4 cup simple syrup, adjusted to taste
Plenty of ice, lime and lemon slices to garnish

Combine everything in a pitcher, stir, taste, adjust the sweetness, and pour over ice. Serve with salted rims if you are Monica and unsalted rims if you are literally anyone else.

The Full Spread

When this board came together, I genuinely stood back and had a moment. Twenty boards. This is number twenty. And I think it might be my favorite one yet.

The character flags, the Central Perk mug, the chicken in her sunglasses, the margarita pitcher, the peonies. It came together exactly the way I wanted it to and that almost never happens. I am very proud of this one.

Watch It With These Episodes

If you are doing a full Friends night with this board, here is where to start: “The One Where Ross Got High” (Season 6, Episode 9) for Rachel’s trifle, “The One with Chandler in a Box” and “The One with All the Thanksgivings” for the Monica turkey moment, “The One with the Cop” (Season 5, Episode 16) for the Moist Maker, and “The Cheesecake” (Season 7, Episode 11) for Chandler and Rachel on the floor. You will not regret any of it.
