The Spider-Man: Homecoming Dinner & Movie Night, Smooshed Down Real Flat

There was never a version of this cookbook where I skipped Spidey. With the new Spider-Man movie swinging into theaters this month, it felt like the universe was telling me it was time. And when it came to picking which Spider-Man film got the dinner treatment, it had to be Homecoming. This was our introduction to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, and honestly, it’s the most fun Spider-Man has ever been. He’s just a kid from Queens trying to figure it out, getting sandwiches at the corner deli and accepting churros from grateful old ladies. It’s a superhero movie that runs on snacks, which means it was basically begging me to build a menu around it.

Matt and I first watched this one during our big COVID chronological MCU marathon, and it was the movie where he officially stopped pretending he was just watching these “for me.” So this dinner was personal. And I had SO much fun making it. Possibly too much fun. You’ll see.

The Web-Slinger

Every good movie night starts with a themed drink, and this one is simple and refreshing, which is exactly what you want next to a table full of deli food and pizza. The Web-Slinger is a red and blue layered drink, so you get that full Spidey suit effect in a mason jar. I stretched a marshmallow web over the rim because if I’m going to commit to a theme, I’m going to COMMIT, and topped it with a little spider straw topper. It took the drink from cute to “did she cater this?” in about thirty seconds.

Delmar’s Deli #5

If you know, you know. Peter’s order at Delmar’s is a number 5 with pickles, smooshed down real flat, and the movie never actually tells us what’s IN a number 5. So I took some creative liberty, which is my favorite kind of liberty. My husband Matt is a pastrami man through and through. Back in California we had a fast food spot called The Hat that is famous for its pastrami, and that sandwich has ruined all other sandwiches for us. So I built our number 5 in its honor. Pastrami piled embarrassingly high on a soft roll with plenty of mustard and extra pickles, wrapped in deli paper like it came straight from the corner of a Queens block. I even made little Delmar’s Deli picks to hold it all together.

Did we smoosh it down real flat? Absolutely. Would Mr. Delmar approve? He’d call it the best sandwich in Queens.

Friendly Neighborhood Chopped Salad

I leaned all the way into the neighborhood Italian bistro vibe for the entrees, and every good pizza joint has a chopped salad on the menu. This one has crisp lettuce, pepperoncini, pepperoni, mozzarella, red onion, and black olives, all tossed in a homemade Italian dressing that I could honestly drink. It’s tangy, a little spicy from the pepperoncini, and it does that thing a great chopped salad does where every single bite has a little bit of everything. It also gave us permission to eat more pizza, which is what salad is for.

And now the main event. There was no version of a Spider-Man dinner without pizza, so I made New York’s Finest Pizza Pie, and then I made it Spidey. After the pizza came out of the oven, I piped a web across the top in tomato paste, and you guys. IT CAME OUT SO CUTE. It looks like the pizza was born this way.

Then, because you know I have no chill, I designed a Spider-Man inspired pizza box to go with it. Friendly Neighborhood Pizza, straight outta Queens, complete with a little spider hanging off the water tower. Serving Queens one slice at a time. It’s the detail nobody asked for and the one I’m most proud of.

This Old Lady Gave Me a Churro

Early in the movie, when Peter is still very much in his awkward training-wheels era of being Spider-Man, he helps an elderly lady with directions and she buys him a churro. It’s one of my favorite little moments in the whole MCU, so homemade churros were the only correct dessert. I made them completely from scratch, then rolled them in red and blue sanding sugar so they’d match the suit.

They were SO SO good. Crispy edges, soft middles, sparkly little Spidey jackets. If you have never made a homemade churro, I need you to hear me: make this recipe. Then come back and thank me later. I’ll wait.

The Whole Friendly Neighborhood Spread

Then it all came together in front of the TV, and this is the part where I always stand back and get a little giddy. Deli sandwiches stacked on the tiers, churros standing by, salad and pizza front and center, Web-Slingers sweating politely on the table while Peter Parker figured out his suit on the big screen. This is what date night at home is supposed to feel like.
