Stranger Things Dinner in the Upside Down

Collage of a Stranger Things themed dinner with burgers, waffle fries, Vecna’s Venom drinks, and a Christmas light cake inspired by the show.

There is something about the Stranger Things series sparks instant nostalgia. It pulls you right back to bikes on gravel roads, walkie talkies, Eggo waffles, and the feeling that something weird is breathing just behind the walls. With the final season releasing on November 26, I wanted to celebrate big. Not with popcorn. Not with pizza. I wanted a full Stranger Things Dinner in the Upside Down that felt like a crossover between Hawkins and the alternate dimension beneath it.

So my husband and I decided to restart the entire series from the beginning. Season one. Episode one. The energy felt just right. I dimmed the lights, set the Philips Hue bulbs to a sinister red glow, and built a menu that blended creepy creature design with easy 80s diner comfort. This was my very first Stranger Things dinner and honestly, it turned into one of my boldest tablescapes yet. Dramatic lighting. Iconic references. Food that photographed like it belonged in a Netflix promo shoot. Most dinners I create start with one or two strong ideas. This one started with five. And every single dish came together to create a meal even better than I could imagine.

Here is everything we served at our Stranger Things Dinner in the Upside Down.

Demogorgonzola

Demogorgonzola puff pastry bites shaped like the Demogorgon with caramelized onions, bacon, and gorgonzola for a Stranger Things themed dinner.

Puff pastry. Gorgonzola. Caramelized onions. Bacon. And the unmistakable shape of a Demogorgon blooming open on the plate. This appetizer is the star of the entire night. It looks like a monster from season one is crawling across your table, but tastes like it belongs on a restaurant menu.

The shaping is simple. You cut the pastry into five petals, add your filling in the center, fold the petals upward, and chill it so the structure holds. When it bakes, it puffs into this dramatic golden flower with a dark, savory center.

It smells sweet from the onions, salty from the bacon, and sharp from the cheese. It is the perfect combination of diner comfort and Upside Down horror. And because it is made with store bought puff pastry, it stays surprisingly approachable.

Served on a dark platter, it sets the tone for the entire night. Dinner has officially entered another dimension.

Benny’s Upside Down Burger

Benny’s Upside Down Burgers served with Eleven’s waffle fries and Stranger Things printables on a themed party table.

Next up is Benny’s Burgers. A Hawkins landmark. A classic American diner. And a place that deserved a spot in this dinner.

The Benny’s Upside Down Burger is exactly what it sounds like. A traditional burger served literally upside down. The top bun becomes the bottom. The bottom becomes the top. The whole thing looks like it got pulled through a portal and rearranged.

The flavors stay comforting and familiar. Juicy burger patty. Melted cheese. Lettuce, tomato, onion. A toasted bun with just the right amount of squish. Even though it is a simple recipe, the upside down presentation gives it this fun, surprising twist that ties directly into the theme.

I made printable Benny’s Burgers logo toppers and tucked them into the patties. Once those were in place, the whole tray suddenly felt straight out of season one. It is nostalgic in the best possible way.

Eleven’s Waffle Fries

You cannot bring Stranger Things to the table without paying tribute to Eleven. Instead of serving full waffles with dinner, I made a big batch of crispy waffle fries. They are quick, golden, salty, and instantly recognizable as her signature food obsession.

I piled them high on a long platter and placed it right between the burgers and the cake. Even without explanation, everyone sees waffle fries next to a Stranger Things theme and says the same thing. “Oh. Eleven.”

Sometimes the smallest, simplest touches are what pull a theme together.

Communi-Cake

Communi-Cake red velvet dessert decorated like the Stranger Things Christmas light alphabet wall with colorful candies and piped lettering.

For dessert, I recreated one of the most iconic visuals in the entire series. Joyce Byers’ alphabet wall.

The Communi-Cake starts with a boxed red velvet cake covered in cream cheese frosting. Across the top, I piped three black strings of “lights.” Peanut M&M pieces stand in as the bulbs. Under each one, I wrote the alphabet in black icing just like Joyce’s desperate attempt to communicate with Will.

The cake feels retro and handmade in a way that fits the 80s perfectly. It is also the most joyful part of the whole meal. Bright lights. Pops of color. A little chaos. And just enough nostalgia to make any fan smile.

Serve this last and let it be the big finale. It is a conversation piece on its own.

Vecna’s Venom

Every Stranger Things themed night needs a signature drink. Something dark. Something moody. Something that feels like it is whispering in a creepy low voice.

Vecna’s Venom is a cranberry based drink with crushed berries that settle like swirling debris at the bottom of the glass. I rimmed each glass in black sugar to give it that extra Upside Down grit and slid a printed Demogorgon topper over each straw. Suddenly, it looked like the monster was biting into the glass.

It works beautifully as a mocktail or a cocktail. It is vibrant and eerie and easily one of the most dramatic I’vemade for a theme night.

When the lights are low and the TV glows with red light, this drink steals the moment.

Setting the Scene

The food is immersive on its own, but the room setup transforms everything. To complete our Stranger Things Dinner in the Upside Down, I turned the living room into a Hawkins-meets-portal space.

I set the TV to the Stranger Things logo so the red glow acted like a backdrop. The Philips Hue lights washed the room in shadowy crimson. On the table, I created height using a tiered server for the burgers and fries. I placed Vecna’s Venom on both sides so the menu card felt framed by the drinks. The Demogorgonzola sat just off center like a creature guarding the table. And the Communi-Cake anchored the front with its bright lights and letters.

It felt like we had stepped right into a Stranger Things set. Dramatic. Nostalgic. Creepy in a playful way. And so much fun to eat while we restarted our rewatch.

How to Use This Menu for Your Own Night

You can recreate the full spread or choose a few items to fit your vibe. Here are a few shortcuts.

Short on time
Choose the burger, waffle fries, and Vecna’s Venom.

Hosting a big premiere night
Turn everything into minis. Slider burgers, mini Demogorgonzola bites, smaller slices of cake.

Want something casual
Serve Vecna’s Venom and the Communi-Cake with pizza. Still incredibly Stranger Things coded.

No matter how you mix and match, the theme will shine through.
