A Simple, Fun Stranger Things Dinner Idea Inspired by Benny’s Burgers

If you grew up loving classic diners, neon signs, and burgers wrapped in crinkly paper, then you already understand the energy behind Benny’s Burgers. It is one of the first locations we see in Stranger Things and it feels so perfectly small town American that I had to build a recipe around it.

But since this is a Stranger Things Dinner in the Upside Down, the burger could not just be a normal burger. Nope. We flip it. Literally.

The Benny’s Upside Down Burger is the easiest themed main course you will ever make. It is just a really good, juicy, diner style burger served upside down so it looks like it went through a portal and came back slightly wrong. It is funny. It is clever. And it photographs like a dream.

If you want a Stranger Things dinner idea that is full of nostalgia and doesn’t make you do acrobatics in the kitchen, this is your hero dish.

How to Make Benny’s Upside Down Burger

(the casual, friend-to-friend version)

Start by seasoning your burger patties. Nothing fancy. Salt, pepper, maybe a little garlic powder if you are feeling bold. Think diner cook, not Michelin chef. Heat up a skillet or grill and get those patties going. You want that sizzling sound that makes everyone in the house yell “oh something smells good.”

While the patties cook, slice your tomato, lettuce, and onion. Classic toppings only. This is Hawkins Indiana. No truffle aioli here.

Toast your buns lightly so they get that soft crisp edge. This little step makes the entire burger taste like a diner ordered it.

Once your patties are cooked to your preferred level, melt the cheese right on top. Let it get nice and gooey. Do not rush it.

Now comes the fun part. Build your burger like normal but flip the whole thing upside down before you serve it. The bottom bun goes on top. The top bun goes on the bottom. That is it. Upside Down officially achieved.

Pop a little Benny’s Burgers printable into the top and suddenly you have a Stranger Things moment right on the plate.

Serve it next to a pile of waffle fries and watch everyone grin because the theme clicks instantly.

Notes for Success

• Use a soft bun for maximum diner vibes
• Toast the bun for flavor and structure
• Let the cheese melt fully so the upside down flip does not get messy
• Add pickles if you want extra crunch
• Serve with Eleven’s Waffle Fries for the full experience

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 preferred
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 slices cheddar or American cheese

For assembly:

  • 4 burger buns lightly toasted
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Tomato slices
  • Red onion slices
  • Pickles optional
  • Ketchup and mustard or your favorite burger sauce

Instructions

  • In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Form into four equal patties.
  • Heat a skillet or grill over medium high heat. Cook the patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
  • Add a slice of cheese to each patty during the last minute of cooking so it melts.
  • Lightly toast the burger buns until golden.
  • Assemble each burger: place lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles on the bun, then add the cooked patty.
  • Add ketchup, mustard, or burger sauce.
  • Flip the entire burger upside down so the bottom bun is on top and the top bun is on the bottom.
  • Serve immediately with waffle fries.

Notes

80/20 beef gives the juiciest diner style burger.
• Toasting the buns keeps them from getting soggy after flipping.
• For a cleaner flip, let the cheese set for 1 minute before assembling.
