The Office Snack Board That Matt Has Earned After 10 Years of Putting Me to Sleep

Let me paint you a picture.

It is eleven o’clock at night. I have been awake since six. I am horizontal, cozy, and approximately forty-five seconds from unconscious. And then, from the television, Michael Scott starts yelling. Not urgently. Not about anything. Just yelling in that particular way he has, where you cannot tell if it is going to be funny or just very uncomfortable, and your brain refuses to tune it out because what if it is important. It is never important. It is never important and yet here I am, eyes back open, Matt asleep beside me within four minutes of pressing play.

This has been my life since the moment we met. Every single night, The Office goes on. It is his white noise machine. His melatonin. His very specific form of psychological peace. I watched it in pieces for years alongside him, never really getting it, always walking in mid-episode and missing whatever made people love these characters so much. I knew Dwight existed. I knew Jim and Pam were a thing. I had no real feelings about any of it because I had never actually watched it in order.

Then I made him sit down and watch the whole series from the beginning. On purpose. With intention. No skipping. No falling asleep through entire seasons.

And I fell completely in love with it.

I am still not on his level. He has a decade-long head start and the kind of encyclopedic knowledge that comes from hearing the same episodes on loop while you are technically asleep. But I get it now. I get why it is the show that goes on every single night. I get why these people feel like people he actually knows. And I wanted to make him something that felt like that. Something that said I see you and I see this show and I took it seriously.

So I built him a snack board. The most chaotic, reference-dense, deeply specific snack board I have ever made in my life. And he read every single pick out loud in the voices. All of them. That is the only review I needed.

The Chili’s Margarita

If you know, you know.

The Dundies are The Office’s version of an awards ceremony, held annually at Chili’s Grill and Bar, and the episode is one of the greatest things this show ever produced. Pam wins the Dundie for Whitest Sneakers. She has clearly had several margaritas. She gives a speech that gets increasingly heartfelt and slightly unhinged, the entire restaurant starts slow clapping, and then she kisses Jim on the lips. Right there at the table. In front of everyone.

Jim’s face after is the face of a man who just had his entire world rearranged at a Chili’s, and it is perfect television.

So obviously the drink for this board had to be a Chili’s style margarita. Green, cold, a little sour, served in a wide glass with a Chili’s logo pick because I commit to the bit.

The recipe is equal parts tequila, triple sec, and sweet and sour mix. Shake it well, pour over ice into a margarita glass, add a lemon wedge on the rim, and add your Chili’s pick. Do not drive anywhere afterward.

Who Put My Stapler in Jell-O Shots

There was never a world where the Jell-O shots did not happen.

Here is the thing people always associate with the Jell-O prank: Dwight. And yes, Dwight’s stapler ends up in Jell-O in the pilot. But the scene I love, the scene that made this completely non-negotiable for me, is when we are first introduced to Andy Bernard. He finds his stapler in Jell-O and he does not handle it quietly. He does not handle it with grace. He handles it in a way that tells you everything you need to know about Andy Bernard in about thirty seconds and sets up multiple seasons of character work immediately.

It is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series.

I know the true fans are going to come for me because the Jell-O in the show is yellow and mine is red. To those people I say: you understood the reference, we are fine, moving on.

Safety Note: Use your best judgment here. The miniature staplers are decorative only and should be removed before serving. This board was designed for adults who can clearly see what they’re eating, not for young children. Please don’t let anyone choke on a tiny stapler – Dwight would not approve.

For the video and photos, I placed a stapler in the top Jell-O shot for the joke, then removed it before serving the board. If you’d rather skip the risk altogether, place the stapler on top of the Jell-O or next to the shot instead.

Nard Dogs

Andy Bernard gave himself the nickname Nard Dog. That is the whole joke and it works every single time without exception.

Hot dogs. In buns. Labeled “Nard Dog.” That is the entire dish. And somehow it is one of my favorite things on this board because it is so perfectly stupid and so perfectly him. I grilled them until they had some color and a little snap, which is the only acceptable way to prepare a hot dog, and planted the Andy Bernard pick right in the center like he owns the place.

Stanley’s Soft Pretzels

Pretzel Day is not a joke at Dunder Mifflin. It is a sacred institution. It is the one day a year that Stanley Hudson, a man who would very much prefer not to be there, shows up with genuine enthusiasm. The entire episode is built around the fact that Pretzel Day matters to Stanley and it is absolutely one of my favorite things the show ever did with his character.

These are soft salted pretzels, served warm, with a Stanley Hudson pick that reads “Well, I like Pretzel Day.” planted directly in them with complete conviction.

Matt picked up the Stanley pick and read it out loud in his voice and I felt like everything I had ever done with my life had led to that moment.

Scott’s Tots

For anyone who has not seen this episode: Michael Scott made a promise to a group of school children that he would pay for all of their college tuitions. He cannot. He shows up years later with a box of laptop batteries. It is the single most uncomfortable piece of television I have ever watched in my entire life and I mean that as the highest possible compliment.

Tater tots. Labeled “Scott’s Tots.” Served golden and crispy in a white dish. Absolutely delicious. Unlike Michael, I delivered on my promise.

Kevin’s Famous Chili

Kevin’s Famous Chili cold open is one of the greatest cold opens in television history. Kevin spends time every single year perfecting his chili. He carries it into the office in an enormous pot. He drops it in the hallway. He tries to scoop it back up with his hands and a trash can lid and a dustpan. It is devastating. You feel every second of it.

I made a big batch of chili, served it in a bowl with Kevin’s photo pick right in the center, and it functioned as the dip situation for the board. Which is honestly the most Kevin way to exist at a party.

Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica

If you need me to explain this one then we need to have a separate conversation first.

Gummy bears for bears. Pickled beets in a Schrute Farms Bed and Breakfast bowl for beets. A Jim Halpert pick standing nearby looking extremely pleased with himself. No actual Battlestar Galactica because I genuinely did not know how to make that a food.

Michael’s Bacon

There is an episode where Michael Scott burns his feet on a George Foreman grill because he wanted to wake up to the smell of bacon every morning. His solution was to put the grill next to his bed and turn it on overnight. He cooked the bacon with his feet. He came to work in a wheelchair. It was one of those scenes that just sticks with you.

The pick says “I like waking up to the smell of bacon” and it is planted in a plate of thick cut bacon that was cooked in a completely normal and foot-free way.

Pam’s Candy Dish

Pam kept a candy dish on her reception desk and it was a whole social ecosystem. People came by just for the candy. It mattered.

I filled a small jar with candy, added the “Dunder Mifflin, This is Pam” pick, and put it right on the board. Small detail. Big payoff for anyone who notices it.

Kit Kats (Break Me Off a Piece of That…)

In one of the best cutaway gags this show ever did, Andy starts singing the Kit Kat jingle and cannot remember the words. He just keeps substituting whatever comes to mind. Break me off a piece of that Fancy Feast. Football cream. Applesauce. He rattles them off with complete confidence and it gets funnier every single time.

I labeled every Kit Kat individually. Every wrong answer he gave. Fancy Feast. Football Cream. Applesauce. Grey Poupon. Hair for Men. All of them. It is the most unhinged food styling decision on this entire board and I have zero regrets.

It Is Your Birthday Cake

When Dwight is put in charge of birthday decorations for Kelly’s birthday, he does the absolute bare minimum with complete and total conviction. One brown balloon. A banner that says “IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY.” Not an exclamation point. A period. A statement of fact. Nothing more, nothing less. He even got a cake with her name spelled wrong.

The tiny birthday cake on this board has the “IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY.” pick in the top of it. The period is load-bearing.

World’s Best Boss Coffee

Michael Scott bought himself a World’s Best Boss mug from Spencer Gifts. He uses it without a single trace of irony. He is extremely proud of it.

I filled it with actual coffee and put it right in the center of the board. It is both a functional beverage and a piece of set dressing simultaneously, which feels very on brand for Michael.

The Whole Table

When everything came together on the tray with The Office sign in front and the show playing behind it, it looked exactly right. Chaotic in a very deliberate way. Like the Dunder Mifflin bullpen if the bullpen was also a snack situation, which honestly it kind of always was.

Matt saw it and read every single pick out loud in the voices. All of them. That was the whole goal and it was achieved completely.
