The Thor Ragnarok Dinner and Movie Night That Started an Entire Cookbook

Thor Ragnarok dinner and movie night full spread with title screen glowing red on TV

I need to tell you something about this chapter.

Last summer I walked into my butcher shop and saw a cut of meat I had never seen before in my life. It was labeled Thor’s Hammer. It was enormous. It was dramatic. It had a long exposed bone that looked exactly like Mjolnir. And something in my brain went completely sideways.

I was not in a Marvel headspace at the time. I was not actively planning another cookbook. I just stood there staring at this cut of meat thinking, that is the most cinematic thing I have ever seen in a grocery context, and then I put it back and went home and thought about it for six months.

I went back to that butcher shop earlier this year. It was there again. And this time I did not put it back.

What followed was a full MCU rewatch, a complete cookbook concept, twelve chapters of themed menus, and honestly one of the most ambitious pieces of work I have ever created. All because a beef shank was labeled correctly at my local butcher.

I am not even a little bit sorry.

Every recipe from this chapter and the full Marvel lineup lives inside Eat Like a Hero, my MCU Dinner & Movie Night cookbook. 👉 https://thefairytalefoodie.com/products/eat-like-a-hero But stay with me because this menu deserves the full story.

The Menu That Could Be Served at a Film to Table Dinner for Hundreds of Dollars

I say that with my full chest. This one just checked every single box. Dramatic centerpiece. A cocktail that is literally on fire. A salad with golden puff pastry horns rising out of it. Smashed herb potatoes that are green and glossy and gorgeous. And a brownie with a silver marshmallow hammer crashed into the center.

I have never made a menu that felt more complete from start to finish. This is the one.

Drinks: The Eternal Flame

Appetizers: Loki’s Mischief Salad

Entrees: Thor’s Hammer, Hulk Smashed Herb Potatoes

Desserts: The Lightning Strike Brownie

All of it is in the cookbook. 👉 https://thefairytalefoodie.com/products/eat-like-a-hero

The Eternal Flame: A Cocktail That Is Actually on Fire

Green. Glowing. Midori and vodka over ice with a black sanding sugar rim and a lime wheel sitting on top holding a small flame.

Yes it is actually on fire. Yes I lit it myself. Yes it photographs exactly as dramatically as it looks in person.

The flame comes from a small amount of Everclear poured into the lime and lit with a long lighter just before serving. The drink glows electric green from the light-up coaster underneath. Dim the lights slightly before you light it and the whole effect is absolutely unreal.

Safety note for anyone recreating this at home: Always use a long lighter and keep it well away from anything flammable. Use only a very small amount of high-proof alcohol. Never drink while the flame is still lit. Blow it out completely first. The flame is optional and the drink is still completely delicious without it, but if you are going to do it, do it safely and do it right.

There is a full mocktail version in the cookbook using melon syrup in place of the Midori, and it is just as gorgeous.

Loki’s Mischief Salad: The Most Extra Salad I Have Ever Made

Fresh mixed greens. Yellow cherry tomatoes. Feta. A light lemon honey Dijon dressing. And rising out of the center of it, two golden puff pastry horns baked until perfectly puffed and dramatic.

It looks like Loki himself styled this salad and honestly that is the highest compliment I can give it. The horns are made from twisted strips of puff pastry baked on their own and nestled into the greens right before serving so they stay crisp. The cookbook has the full method and it is easier than it looks.

Thor’s Hammer: The Cut of Meat That Started Everything

Here is what I told my husband before I made this. I said, I do not know if you are going to love this because I have never made it before and I do not know if it is going to come out like a pot roast situation.

He does not love a pot roast situation. I want to be clear about that.

What came out of that oven was nothing like a pot roast. It was fall apart braised beef with deeply charred edges and a rich glossy sauce from the braising liquid, and the flavor was closer to short ribs than anything else I have ever made. Short ribs on crack, if we are being specific. It was hands down one of the best things I have ever cooked and my husband who was skeptical going in was very much not skeptical by the end of the meal.

The beef shank is labeled Thor’s Hammer at most specialty butcher shops. Call ahead and ask for it because not every case carries it regularly. The cookbook also includes accessible alternatives using bone-in short ribs or chuck roast with the exact same method and flavor profile if you cannot find the shank. But if you can find it, get it. Do not put it back like I did the first time.

Hulk Smashed Herb Potatoes: Because That Fight Scene Demanded It

If you have seen Thor Ragnarok you know exactly which scene I am talking about. Thor and Hulk in the arena on Sakaar. The whole crowd going absolutely wild. The announcer losing his mind.

I could not make a Thor Ragnarok menu and not acknowledge that moment. So I smashed potatoes. Golden baby potatoes boiled until tender, pressed flat, roasted at high heat until the edges are deeply crispy, then immediately tossed in a glossy garlic herb butter loaded with parsley, chives, and lemon juice. They come out vibrantly green and completely irresistible.

They also photograph beautifully and looked stunning on the table alongside the hammer. Two showstoppers on one night. The Hulk would approve.

The Lightning Strike Brownie: A Callback Worth Making

The dessert wrote itself the moment I decided on the menu. A fudgy dark chocolate brownie baked in a dramatic shaped pan, topped with crushed Biscoff cookies for the impact crater effect, and finished with a marshmallow and pretzel rod hammer topper painted in silver luster dust.

If you read the Avengers chapter you already know I have a thing for silver luster dust. Same technique here. Mix it with a few drops of alcohol to create an edible paint, brush it over the marshmallow hammer head until it is fully silver, and let it set completely before placing it in the brownie. The result looks like Mjolnir just crashed into your dessert and honestly that is exactly right.

The Full Spread in Action

Green glowing drinks on both sides of the table. The hammer in the center. Loki horns rising out of a salad. Smashed potatoes glistening under the light. Brownies that look like they just survived a thunderstorm. Thor on the TV looking exactly as smug as he should.

This is the dinner I will be talking about for a very long time.
