The Parent Trap Dinner & Movie Night That Made Me Feel Like a Kid Again (and a Little Bit Jealous of a Fictional Dad)
I have loved The Parent Trap my entire life. The 1998 version, obviously. Lindsay Lohan at peak Lindsay Lohan, running around Camp Walden, discovering she had a twin she never knew about, and somehow pulling off a British accent well enough that I fully bought it as a child. I watched this movie on repeat. I had opinions about it. I still have opinions about it.
Here is my hottest take: Meredith Blake is not even that bad. She is just a woman who did not want to raise someone else’s kids and was not afraid to say it. Honestly, a little relatable. But I digress.
The real thing I need to confess is that I had a full-on crush on Dennis Quaid in this movie. I was a child. He was a fictional wine-growing father with a golden retriever and good arms. I don’t make the rules. And Natasha Richardson as Elizabeth James was just luminous. Warm and elegant and completely effortless. When she passed in 2009 I was genuinely devastated. This movie is such a time capsule of two people who were just magnetic on screen, and rewatching it for this chapter reminded me exactly why it holds up.

Oh No, I’m Allergic Strawberry Salad
If you have seen this movie recently, you already know. Both girls are allergic to strawberries. It comes out at camp during what is already a spectacularly chaotic dinner scene, and it is one of those small details that cements the fact that these two are absolutely the same person. Same dad. Same allergies. Same terrifying ability to scheme.
I made this salad anyway, because some of us are not allergic to anything and feel smug about it. It is a simple mixed green situation with fresh strawberries, candied pecans, red onion, crumbled feta, and a balsamic vinaigrette, and it is genuinely one of the prettiest things on the table. Light, fresh, just a little bit sweet. The perfect thing to eat before a bowl of chili that is going to absolutely wreck you in the best way.

Chessy’s Golden Corn Bread
This one is for the scene where Annie arrives at the Napa ranch pretending to be Hallie, and Chessy has made her favorite chili. Chessy, who sees through the whole thing immediately but plays along anyway because she is the most loyal human being in any movie ever made. The corn bread is golden and cheesy and baked in individual mini cast iron skillets because I refuse to do things halfway.
I topped each one with a fresh jalapeño slice because we like a little heat around here and because it looks incredible. The jalapeño melts into the top of the cornbread just enough that you get a little kick without it being overwhelming. If you are heat-averse, leave it off. If you are a reasonable person, keep it on.
The styling detail that I am most proud of: I tucked little printed photos of Nick and Elizabeth into the skillets, along with a Queen Elizabeth II coin in the center one. A little nod to the transatlantic love story. A little chaotic. Very on brand.

Annie’s Favorite Chili
This is my favorite recipe in the whole cookbook and I will stand behind that statement. We are a no-beans household. I know that is controversial. I know there are people reading this right now who are personally offended. The recipe gives you the option because I am not a monster, but for us, no beans, and the chili is better for it.
What makes this chili special is the chuck roast. I throw it in with the ground meat and let it all cook down together until it is deeply rich and barely holding itself together. The texture is completely different from a standard ground beef chili. It is thicker. Meatier. More. Matt and I have done keto more than once and this is one of the recipes we come back to every single time because it is the kind of food that actually satisfies you. Topped with shredded cheddar, a dollop of sour cream, and some fresh jalapeño slices, it looks as good as it tastes.
Chessy would approve. I am certain of it.

Summer Camp Squeeze
Every summer camp needs a signature lemonade. Camp Walden absolutely had one. I am choosing to believe this without any evidence whatsoever.
The Summer Camp Squeeze is a homemade lemonade that tastes clean and bright and exactly like something that would cost $18 at a fancy resort camp in Maine. It is served in tall glasses with blue striped straws and a Camp Walden flag sticking out of the top because the details matter and I have a label maker and no self-control. For the adults in the room, a shot of vodka makes this a proper cocktail and I highly recommend it.

And then there are the Evian bottles. I could not find actual Evian bottles easily, so I printed labels and taped them to bottles I already had at home. Then I taped little plastic lizards onto the outside of each bottle because if you know, you know, and if you do not know, go watch the movie and come back.

Peanut Butter and Oreo Bars
The girls bond over Oreos and peanut butter. They sit on the roof at camp and eat them together and it is one of those small perfect movie moments that feels completely real. I have loved Oreos and peanut butter together my entire life and I did not need a movie to tell me they belonged together, but I appreciate the validation.
These bars have an Oreo cookie crust, a thick layer of peanut butter filling, a dark chocolate swirl on top, and Oreo halves pressed into the surface. They are rich and they are stunning and that swirl is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the visual department. Genuinely one of the prettiest things I have made for this whole cookbook. The kind of dessert that makes people stop scrolling.

The Full Spread
Getting everything on the table at once is always the moment. The chili in the foreground, the cornbread front and center, the Oreo bars on the upper tier, the salad on the side, the lemonade flanking the whole setup. The Parent Trap menu board standing behind it all with the movie playing on the TV. It came together exactly the way I hoped it would.
